Fairdale Rockitship • Chris Cotsonas • April 12, 2017 •

fairdale-rockitship-2557

We’re excited to show you the Fairdale Rockitship.

fairdale-rockitship-2575

Shortly after launching the Goodship in 2014, we began getting requests for a version that would accommodate racks, fenders, and bigger tires. At our design office, we have to juggle our time between a lot of different projects so we decided to let the idea sit for a while, both so we could think about it, and also because we could see that options for disc brakes and 1x drivetrains were continuing to grow at a rapid pace.

fairdale-rockitship-2564

fairdale-rockitship-2570

Roughly one year ago, we began drawing the Rockitship with the same Drawnright 4130 chromoly tubeset used on the Goodship, but making it with rack-ready 12mm thru-axle dropouts and flat mount disc brakes. While we obviously wanted to use the bike for touring around and going off-road, we didn’t want to go “full” mountain bike with this one, so we designed it around working with an ENVE CX fork. This means that we have a 1-1/2” to 1-1/8” headtube and lots of clearance up front. The frame will comfortably fit tires up to 41mm/1.6 inches wide, which allows it to work with either a 2x or 1x drivetrain, while also maintaining a shorter chainstay length.

We are currently working on a complete bike, but if we can’t hit our pricing goals, then the Rockitship will be available as a frame and fork kit.

Testing duties for the first prototype went to Leif Valin (his bike is pictured here), and we asked him to write up some thoughts on the bike:

fairdale-rockitship-2565

fairdale-rockitship-2562

The Fairdale Rockitship uses custom butted, heat-treated Drawnright tubing that is ED (epoxy) coated inside for excellent corrosion protection. It allows for excellent durability and a smooth ride feel. It’s a strong bike, but it’s still light enough to race to the finish-line or to the campsite.

Spec’d with a 142×12 thru-axle dropout with the mounting ability to use a rack, the Rockitship is able to use a variety of up-to-date hub and wheel choices, while maintaining some utilitarian versatility. The three bottle mounts, plus a low seat tube bottle mount for maximum frame bag clearance, allows you to bring along plenty of hydration.

When run with a tubeless rim, orange seal sealant, and a 40c tire (like the Maxxis Rambler) your possibilities for exploring are close to being maximized. The lower tire pressure and added traction allows for a smooth and efficient ride. It lets you take routes that normally would’ve left you with flats and jiggled up internal organs.

The Rockitship will definitely help you find your way to funtown, whether the road there is paved or dirt.

The Spaceship • Francis • February 14, 2017 •

fairdale-spaceship-build-1-webPhotos by Sandy Carson

In the fall of 2016 Fairdale had an opportunity to make road frames using custom drawn 3/2.5 titanium tube sets. Our initial thought was that it seemed like a fun R&D project to tackle, but that in the long run it probably wasn’t going to be very practical for Fairdale or our customers.

Titanium is a great material for high-performance bike frames, but the added cost is usually hard for us to justify over chromoly or aluminum when it comes time for production. However, since this would end up as very limited edition project, or maybe never even leave the prototype stages, we decide to go for it, knowing that it would still be an awesome learning experience.

New Water Bottles! • Francis • July 8, 2016 •

Did you go on a bike ride, eat some pretzels, and found yourself thirsty? Well, don’t sweat. We have a couple new water bottles in stock.

There’s our 26oz Shark Bike and our 22oz Shark Walk. Each one utilizes The Purist technology which shields the bottle from taste, mold, and staining. Nothing sticks, your bottle stays clean, and your water tastes pure.

In addition to these new water bottles, there’s also our 16oz K.E.G. Storage. It fits in standard water bottle cages with a mouth large enough to stash emergency tools, patch kits, more pretzels, and whatever else you don’t want bunching up your pockets.

Upgrade your old Weekender with more gear range • Taj • January 27, 2016 •

CAR_0826

The 2016 Weekender Drop comes stock with a 11- 40t rear cassette. With 10 different gears ranging from a-bombing-down-a-hill-high-speed 11t to the granny-gear-hill-climbing 40t you can ride anything that comes your way. Older Weekenders have an 11-36t rear cassette. If you want a bigger range of gears you can follow the traditional path and add a front derailleur and another sprocket up front. Another option is to take advantage of all the 1x upgrades available in the mountain bike world. Leif Valin upgraded Sandy Carson’s Weekender with a OneUp 42t rear cassette kit and a Wolf Tooth narrow/wide front sprocket.

Daybirds at work in Austin as a rental fleet • Taj • October 3, 2015 •

retnalmain

I should tell y’all sometime about the day I first set foot in Austin back in 1992. It was a life changer and a magical moment. I’ve been forever in love with riding bikes around that city because of it. I know not all cities are perfect for cycling, but pretty much year round Austin is better enjoyed by bicycle than any other means of transportation I can think of. Austin Bike Tours and Rental recently picked up a fleet of 30 Daybirds and put them to work. On a strictly personal level that is a such an awesome achievement for me! Fairdale exists because I fell in love with riding bikes around Austin… to see our bikes being lent out of strangers to experience some of what I love is the coolest thing I can imagine. View More

The Radavist reviews The Goodship • Taj • August 4, 2015 •

The-Fairdale-Goodship-with-SRAM-Force-22-54-1335x890

John Watson shot this photo and some other great ones of our Goodship for Andre Chelliah’s review on The Radavist.

Check out the review that contains excellent consumer advice like this, “What would I change on the bike? Not a lot. At $2999.99, The Goodship might be the best complete steel road race bike available right now. I definitely feel that for the price point, you are getting the most bang for your buck.”

Thanks The Radavist! We really appreciate it!!

THE BADSHIP: Ridden & Reviewed • Francis • July 14, 2015 •

FairdaleBadship_FaceComplete

Bicycle Sports Shop wrote up a review talking about our latest creation, The Badship. This one of  a kind specially painted Goodship frame and fork also got a special part build (and so we named it the Badship). They had the pleasure of sailing around on this black beauty for about a week, and you can read about their experience by clicking HERE. It’s also full of great insight into our Goodship frame and fork too:

“…But the bike is also point and shoot. Aim the Goodship at a turn and counter steer a bit and the bike holds a line like it’s nobody’s business. At speed or cruising town, the Goodship capably does what’s asked of it when it comes to handling. And that holds true out at the Driveway Series as well. Hanson at the Lamar store has a Goodship that stepped on the podium a few weeks back. Not for nothing but he rolled away from a bevy of guys on the latest aero everything and just missed the win taking second. All aboard a Goodship.”

Check out the full review and keep in mind the Badship will be auctioned off for a charity Aug.1 so it could be yours!

And thanks to BSS, SRAM, and Zipp for making the Badship reality.

PS I just mistyped “Badship” as “BARship”. Could be a new bar cruising model!!
